Café Philosophique explores the hidden forces shaping our lives through creative arts, writing and conversation.
We meet on the 3rd Wednesday of the month at the Bridge Hotel in Werribee. We explore a new theme each night through a performance or workshop, feature poet, prompted creative writing, an open mic, and facilitated conversations.
On Wednesday July 15 we will explore MUSIC.
From blowing wind through reeds, to chanting and drumming, music is one of humans earliest inventions. Why are we so drawn to it? What's its role in storytelling and communication? Why are we so moved by it? How does it have such power over our emotions?
These are just some of the questions we will explore on the night!
We will begin with a circle singing workshop facilitated by Bonnie Smith. Circle singing has been described as a drum circle for the voice. Standing in a circle, the leader facilitates the group improvising different parts, rhythms and harmonies. "Not being able to sing" is no excuse! It's a no-mistake zone, as no matter what you sound like, the rest of the group miraculously makes you sound great!
We will then hear from our feature poet NOMAD, whose spoken word is influenced by his work as a hip hop emcee and deep lover of music. NOMAD's performance will set the scene for our own writing time, using prompts to help put pen to paper to explore our own relationship to the night's theme.
After our open mic, we will end with delicious desserts and our "philosophy café" - small group, facilitated conversations where we listen and learn from each other about how music has influenced our lives.
