15:23 A Re-collection of Resistance (Exhibition)

  • TBH Studio 57 Bridge Mall Ballarat Central, VIC, 3350 Australia (map)

To mark the 20-year anniversary of her escape from eight years of coercive control, one young woman shares her experience of insidious mundane horror.

Learn about her inner world in an intricately detailed case study of escalating intimate partner violence. Be immersed in four distinct snapshots that include collage, poetry, risk assessments and music.

As a practicing family violence professional, the artist herself prefers to remain anonymous, while simultaneously elevating the voice and perspective of "the victim" through this deliberate display of imagery.
To be totally in control of the artworks, down to the very last detail, is a highly cathartic act, and a form of reclaiming identity. The artist regains control by commanding exactly what the viewer is presented with, as she invites them to look closer and understand the secret inner workings of coercive control.

This mixture of old and new pieces, some created during the relationship and many in the years afterwards will be displayed in each of the four former changing rooms at TBH Studio in Bridge Mall.

Far from another academic treatment of the issue, 15:23 is a cerebral scream of resistance and survival - contributing to the healing of one young woman's past, while adding to the collective consciousness around men's violence against women.

The exhibition carries a trigger warning for Family violence, intimate partner violence, sexual violence, sexual assault, grooming, suicide, self-harm, domestic murder, violence against women.

The exhibition is proudly produced by Megan J Riedl.
