A Hill to Die On explores the ancient, everyday experience of promise, followed by the return back into despair. It’s the personal account of a poet living in the profound joy and frailty of language. Drawing on narrative, myth and fable, Curnow’s first collection in eight years connects the ongoing saga of hope to the events of his own life, one that’s ever creative, lyrical and full of broken lines.
What people are saying about A Hill to Die On...
Francesca De Tores: 'A rare collection that dares to be sincere. Curnow is sharp and funny, but never seduced by cheap cynicism or the detachment of irony. Instead, he’s neck deep in the business of living, in search of ‘a saviour who swims.’ He asks, ‘What is the use of asking / for light?’ He keeps asking nonetheless - and these poems give us a reason to do the same.'
Kevin Brophy: 'Though these poems are crammed with wit, though their ear for the vernacular is pitch perfect, though they do things with words you didn’t think were possible, and though they’re all heart even when they’re reveling in their own performance, what I love most about Curnow’s poetry is its willingness to go so outrageously far so quietly—so quietly that the reader becomes all ears. This is talking at its best. And isn’t talking together what we live for?
