NEW SEASON. NEW INTENTIONS.

We are back on our beloved premiere stage at the Brunswick Ballroom.

Slama is a space where we celebrate intersectional community and encourage Artists to bring their absolute best work to the stage.

On March 19th, after some many needed months of rest and recalibration, we celebrate the return of our beloved Melbourne Poet Tariro Mavondo

WHO IS TARIRO?

Tariro’s poetry is somatic, a loud eruptive invitation to enlist oneself to presence as the passageway into experiencing the sensorium of human and non human kinship. Tariro is the essence of an artist, her life work is tethered to re-villagising, unifying through difference and remaking a post humanist world where all things seen and unseen, known and unknown thrive. Nominated for an Aria Music Award in 2021 with her collaboration with The Australian Art Orchestra for Best Jazz Album last year and won an APRA AMCOS award for Work of the Year: Electroacoustic/Sound Art, for Closed Beginnings. Tariro has been a featured poet at Slamalamadingdong, Better Of Said, Melbourne Spoken Word and Poetry Festival, Passionate Tongue, Mother Tongue, Emerging Writers Festival, African Music and Cultural Festival, Melbourne Poets Union. She has been published in Growing Up African in Australia Black Inc Books and Going Down Swinging.

All scores are accumulated throughout the season and the poets with the top scores make it into our Grand Slam. Since 2023 was our first full season back in person and a new TEAM SLAMA was formed. We are declaring 2024 our “off season” so we can nurture the current team’s creative process towards regional and international travel.

In this “off season” we will be focusing on nourishing our community, loving on new to the stage poets and strengthening our processes in preparation for another team based finale in 2025. This is a perfect season for fresh voices and less excuses, so if you’ve been dreaming of standing on the Slama stage and competing, now is it.

This year our Grand Slam will occur in November 2024. Grand Slam Prizes to be announced.
