David Hallett @ Cherry Poets

  • Cherry Tree Hotel 53 Balmain Street Cremorne, VIC, 3121 Australia (map)

This week we have the wonderful performance poet David Hallett coming down from Northern NSW. David will be showcasing poems from his 2020 collection 'Out of the Blue'. You remember 2020 right? Not a lot of showcasing happened that year. We're excited to have him back this side of the border. And of course there will be open mic (sign up on the day, from 1.30pm) and a fine selection of beers on tap/food for yr belly.

BIO

One of Australia’s premiere performance poets, David Hallett has been writing and performing his poetry since the 1970’s. During the past 40 years David has developed an innovative, accessible, highly entertaining and original form of spoken word performance.

David won the 2019 Reciter of the Year Award in Canberra at the National Folk Festival. Twice winner of the Poetry Olympics at the Sydney Writers Festival at the Opera House in 1995, and again in ’97 at the Lyric Theatre. Byron Bay Writers Festival Poetry Prize in 1999, the Nimbin Performance Poetry World Cup 2003 and the Spirit of Woodford Story Award 2005, the Woodford Festival Wordfood Poetry Slam 2012 and Byron Bay Writers Festival Poetry Slam 2013.

In 1991 David founded Lismore's Live Poets, and in 1992 he began Byron Bay's Writers at the Rails; he also began touring with a dynamic poetry performance troupe the Stand Up Poets. For many years David has given entertaining and inspirational school poetry performances, together with masterclasses for senior students on HSC curriculum poets.

He has performed and toured extensively at festivals, schools, colleges, universities and Writers Centres; from cafes to cabarets to conferences, and radio and television.

‘Out of the Blue’ is David Hallett's fourth collection of published poems, tracing the cycles of war and peaces, the spin of politics and media, climate chaos, love, shopping and our maddening digital world.
