Perc.U.Lations -12th April - ft. Helen Jarvis

  • Kafe on Hemmings 86 Hemmings Street Dandenong, VIC, 3175 Australia (map)

It is a delight to introduce the Perc.U.lations crowd to our amazing April feature: Helen Jarvis!

Helen is a British-born writer who has lived for two decades in Melbourne/Naarm. Her writing has won the Nillumbik Poetry Ekphrasis award and the Ada Cambridge awards for poetry and biographical prose. She was runner-up in the 2024 Gwen Harwood Poetry Prize and has been shortlisted for poetry prizes including the ACU, MPU and Martha Richardson awards. Her work has appeared in award anthologies and in the Australian journals Island and Rabbit, and she has featured on 3CR’s Spoken Word radio program. In 2024, Helen performed her poetry at the Third International Poetry Festival of Naoussa in Greece.

Helen has just launched 'The Kindness of Water', her first collection of poetry. "Wide-ranging, sensitive an reflective, it is characterised by certain sense of longing: the perennial migrant experience, suspended between embracing a new world and regretting a world that has been lost. The perspective that emerges from this precarious balance lends a freshness and an urgency to the close observation that characterises these poems."

Our Poetry and Spoken Word events are (usually) held on the second Saturday of the month at 3 p.m., with a Poetry Writing Workshop running from 2 pm to 3 pm for anyone interested.
An 'open mic' is available for as many poets as possible before and after our feature (or as much poetry as we are happy to share before our time is up).

This gig is happy to celebrate young poets (the Little Aesthetics program for anyone 12 and under) as well as people who read the works of other poets (the Rhetorical Recreation Society). If you have work you would like other people to present, you will always find cheerful readers too.

The venue for Perc.U.lations is the wonderfully generous Kafé on Hemmings (86 Hemmings St), in Dandenong, about a 15-minute walk from either Dandenong or Yarraman train stations. There is also handy, free parking available behind the medical centre on the opposite corner.

This event is ticketed using ‘Pay as you Feel’ via Eventbrite, as the Kafé will continue serving the general public. Therefore, open-mic and feature presenters are asked to keep their works in the 'PG' range for this event.

Perc.U.lations is affiliated with Radio Laria and is committed to highlighting the voices of women and gender-diverse poets. 50% or more of all features throughout the year will be women, however, men are also encouraged to apply to this event, and the open mic is open to anyone.

Perc.U.lations, is taking place on the stolen lands of the Wurundjeri and Bunerong peoples of the Kulin Nation. Sovereignty was never ceded, and we extend our respects to Indigenous elders past, present, and emerging.
