Hello everyone, Wednesday the 20th of November is Poetic Express night... and the feature performer is the unique Noodle E. String!
To say I've been busting to have Noodle come down from Darwin and feature in Melbourne is an extreme understatement. He appeared at Passionate Tongues down here some years ago on a flying visit, and this time it is specifically to perform at Poetic Express! He originally made his mark in Melbourne poetry back in the 80s and hung out with the legendary Rex Buckingham. He is one of the very few who can legitimately be called a street poet. Noodle was a regular fixture at Passionate Tongues in Aukland, hosted by originator Michael Rudd, and he truly has a place in the history of poetry around Australia. How's this for a bio:
Noodle E. String first started performing poetry at the Brunswick Hotel with Rex(rip.)Buckingham as MC.
He was an active member of the Squatters Union at the time as he squatted in a building which became known as the Empress, where Squatters Union of Victoria had their Squatters Cafe for a year or so.
Noodle at this time used to sell his poetry on recycled Tetra Packaging along Brunswick St Fitzroy.
After leaving Melbourne he briefly moved to Brisbane where he polished his technique at the Storey Bridge hotel and on city streets.
He also used to sell his poetry on books made from Beer bags and sold 1 at an Auction @ the Bridge for $39 once.
He later went onto support Doug Anthony All Stars(DAAS)@ the Rialto theatre ( twice) where on his second night he emerged from a wheelie bin naked, reciting poetry and dressing on stage keeping the bin in between his genitals and the audience as well as performing once at the University of Queensland.
He then hitchhiked to Melbourne to arrange 2 performances with DAAS in Perth at the Floreat Amphitheatre after hitch-hiking across Australia.
After selling his poetry on Fremantle streets for several months he then hitch hiked to Darwin with a 240 litre wheelie bin.
On arriving in Darwin he took over running Palm City Poetry and also Trinculo in Darwin Theatre Groups production of Shakespeare's " The Tempest" as well as Corin in "As You Like It".
Darwin saw the birth of his first and only child, Rangi Treacle Venus Beetle String 1st.
He then moved to New Zealand where he became a common sight on K'Rd where he busked and sold his work. Other cities he performed in were Wellington, Dunedin and Invercargill.
After leaving NZ he moved back to Darwin where he resides.
Noodle is originally from Perth and is a Gemini with a Sagittarius moon and was part of the missing Generation before it was expunged from the history books.
There will be open mic of course, plus the famous hospitality of The Brothers Public House. See you there
