PoetiCas has been hosting regular poetry gatherings in Castlemaine since 2015, following on the tradition of Ross Donlon's poetry readings in the decade prior. It has grown into a wonderful community and their monthly events are beloved by many. Lockdowns and uncertainty put their activities on pause for much of 2020 and 2021, and they are now thrilled to announce a new chapter at a fine new venue.
The usual format brings a feature poet to share their work, as well as an open section for the community to share their own original poems in a warm and supportive space, lovingly MC'd by local poet and publisher Tegan Gigante. All are welcome to attend, to read or just to listen.
FEATURED POET:
Our reader this month is a familiar face: your regular host, Tegan Gigante, appearing as a feature poet for the first time in PoetiCas' ten-year history.
Tegan Gigante is a poet, performer and publisher based on Djaara country in Central Victoria. As well as convening PoetiCas for the last decade, she powers the micro press Birdfish Books, and is a member of the Editorial Advisory Board of 5islands Press. The author of two collections, I Will Not Fall (2013) and All Things Flow (2019), she writes of our entangled contemporary relationship to land; and maintains a romantic belief in the capacity of the lyric to heal.
She completed a Master’s degree with her thesis on traditional poetics, and currently programs a monthly lecture series for the Bendigo Philosophical Society. Tegan co-creates Wattle & Dub, a weekly radio show on Castlemaine’s Mainfm, and is a traditional storyteller with a penchant for trickster tales. She lives in her beloved Box-Ironbark forest with many lyric birds and other creatures of the wild.
