Assorted Sporks is a free queer friendly regular poetry and performance night at Mamma Chen's Every second Thursday. But on the 29th of January we are doing something a little different!
To kick off the year with a bit of fanciness and celebration I’m getting some of the biggest supporters of the gig together! They’ve helped me run it, or they’ve promoted it, or they’ve attended like clockwork and told their friends, or they’ve brainstormed and problem solved in the background or they’ve really helped to make Assorted Sporks what it is in dozens of ways! They have been super awesome people and they are super awesome poets and performers!
So we are having the open mic as always, and then we have SIX special guests doing ten minute spots! Followed by more open mic!
PRESENTING!
RussellBoyle.Com you’ve seen him, you know him, he’s lovely. I particularly enjoy the way he puts his soul into everything he does, and of course his singing.
Kitten, who describes her poetry as like a brick to the face, I love it! It kinda blasts you with honesty.
George, the amazing sound person. Who I have told to make it weird, which he was totally going to do anyway.
Steve Smart, who has so much range in his writing that he could bring just about any style and introspection or extroversion to the stage, but I am encouraging people to make it weird, so be on the look out.
Es Foong/Waffle Irongirl, whose poetry I once described as being like really beautiful paper cuts. Es once did an entire feature performance from inside a tent.
Sarah St James, who writes so beautifully and relatably that I like humans more after hearing her poetry.
7:00 pm for a 7:30 pm start, sign up will be available on the night.
5 minute limit on the open mic, make it weird if you can.
Perform your poetry, creative writing or performance art on the open mic to a friendly audience or come and be part of the crowd. Completely free. Hosted by Loran Steinberg (they/them) To keep this event a safe space for everyone, there will be no hate speech or your mic will be turned off and you will be asked to leave the stage.
Mamma Chen's is a wheelchair accessible venue however, the stage is not; we can organise lift access to the stage if you contact us a few days prior to the event.
Mamma Chen’s acknowledges the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung and the Bunurong peoples of the Kulin Nation, the true owners of the land that we live and operate on. We would like to pay our respects to their Elders past and present and extend that respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
