Perc.U.Lations 9th March 2024 ft. Carla de Goede

  • Kafe on Hemmings 86 Hemmings Street Dandenong, VIC, 3175 Australia (map)

Our Poetry and Spoken Word events will be held once more on the second Saturday of the month at 3 p.m., with a Poetry Writing Workshop running from 2 pm to 3 pm.

Feature:
*Carla de Goede's poems are poems of the celebration of survival. And they are a celebration, even the harrowing, the startling, the shocking poems. They celebrate the survival of the poet and the survival of her attempts to understand her world and to communicate her understanding to us.

Although most of her poems seem centered in an urban world, they are infused with an arcadian magic. Buildings, seen from a train, are 'running like concrete emus'. Pedestrians walk past 'like speeding skinks'. An abandoned house is 'all dark windows / and skulking cats'. A white-coated scientist is 'like a kite stuck in a tree'. The natural world is everywhere in her poems and refuses to be excluded.

De Goede's poems are intriguing, unsettling, hopeful, and joyful. She writes of 'scraping ink together / like I know what I'm doing'.

She knows what she's doing.*

An 'open mic' is available for as many poets as we can squeeze in before and after our feature. This gig is happy to celebrate young poets (the Little Aesthetics program for anyone 12 and under) as well as people who read the works of other poets (the Rhetorical Recreation Society). If you have work you would like other people to present, you will always find cheerful readers as well.

The venue for Perc.U.lations is the wonderfully generous Kafé on Hemmings (86 Hemmings St), in Dandenong. about a 15-minute walk from either Dandenong or Yarraman train stations. There is also handy, free parking available behind the medical centre on the opposite corner.

Perc.U.lations, is taking place on the stolen lands of the Wurundjeri peoples of the Kulin Nation. Sovereignty was never ceded and we extend our respects to Indigenous elders past, present, and emerging.

This event is ticketed using ‘Pay as you Feel’ via Eventbrite, as the Kafé will continue serving the general public, and closing off the area isn't feasible. This way even walk-in traffic can contribute.

Perc.U.lations is affiliated with Radio Laria and is committed to highlighting the voices of women and gender-diverse poets. 50% or more of all features throughout the year will be women, however, men are also encouraged to apply to this event and the open mic is open to anyone.
